Cancelled: 28 Apr 2021

It’s clear that under these conditions the track will not dry so the committee have taken the decision to cancel tonight’s racing now.

We will roll over all entries to next week.

Track League Week #3

Weather Alerts: Short Version

Chance of rain today at a time which may affect racing. Watch the website and the social media channels (linked below) for any updates. We will also endeavour to SMS message those of you who gave us a mobile number if we decide/need to cancel.

What about my entry?

By default, with a cancellation, we will move everyone’s entry to the next week.

Weather Alerts: Long Version

Those of you new to the track league may not be aware that our risk assessment for riding on fixed gear bikes (track bikes in other words) is reliant on our track being both clean and dry.

This is because we suffer from a degree of moss on two of the corners covered by overhanging trees. When this gets wet it is quite slippery. This can be problematic on a freewheel bike but fixed gear becomes much more difficult to keep control of.

So when we race track it is reliant on the track being dry, or sometimes being likely to be dry within a reasonable amount of time.

A lot of this will come down to weather conditions. When there are high winds or high temperatures the track can dry quite quickly. Without those, the problematic parts can take an age to dry.

So the majority of the time we will try to call a cancellation by 5:00pm to avoid people setting out. However if it looks like the track may dry with enough daylight left to make a late start feasible (with enough daylight) we might defer.

This does of course mean that there is always the possibility that we might get to the track and have to cancel at the last minute, though this rarely happens in practice.

Volunteers

We are lacking ANY volunteers on the spreadsheets for the upcoming events. Again.

Please sign up for cover at an event on this page here.

If you only race track league, maybe sign up for cover at one of the upcoming circuit races.

If you only do the circuit races, consider helping out at a track league evening on a Wednesday (who knows, it might inspire you to have a go).

Volunteers will usually be provided with at least one hot drink as a bit of compensation, and the knowledge that you help keep the racing alive.

Just to reiterate, everything that SCRL does is run by volunteer. Nobody here takes any payment for their time or effort, not in cash or in kind, we all still pay our league dues and entries, just like you.

No volunteers = no racing.

Fancy doing something a bit more involved?

We could use a few people to sign up as on-the-day organisers. This basically entails being the person in charge on the day. Things like:

  • Be at the venue about an hour before start.
  • Make sure the track has been inspected/swept if needed.
  • Make sure all equipment is put out and ready.
  • Make sure that all volunteer roles are filled.
  • Open up and lock the pavilion
  • Make sure the track gates are locked up and marshals put in position.
  • Take care of various queries so that the other volunteers can do their job.
  • Ensure everything is packed away and locked afterwards and that sign-in and result information is passed to the person who requires it.

These aren’t tasks you necessarily have to do yourself, but you have to make sure they happen.

To enable you to fulfil this role you must:

  • Have a British cycling Membership (any level I think)
  • Undergo a 1 or two hour introduction to the British cycling event management system. This will probably be online over video conferencing. You will likely not have to use it for the on-the-day role but it is a BC requirement.

If you think you can help, contact us using the form on the website here.

Circuit Entries Open!

You can now read about our Covid restricted circuit races and enter at our circuit races calendar page.

There are cash prizes on offer for each entry group.

Do note that there are just two entry groups and are both 3/4 category, not as listed on the BC website. This is because running two races for each category would be too pushed for time over three groups, and we want to make sure we offer something for new racers.

Please don’t forget to read our covid guidance and also to remember to send in your licence details once you have completed your entry.

Details are on both the entry page and in the entry confirmation email.

Entries extended + what to expect

Enter up to 3pm OTD

We have been able to extend entries up to 3pm on the day of racing. So if you missed the deadline it’s not too late. Enter here.

Getting your number

Our plan is to lay out envelopes over the grass with name and number written on the envelope. Be aware we had a number re-jig, so if you registered early your number may not be the same as you were told.

Entries for next week

Entries for April 21st will open at 6am on Thursday on Rider HQ. The consistent link to take you to our entry page for league events is https://scrl.co.uk/enter/track-league or go to the calendar page and use the link there.

Almost there…

We are nearly ready to go. The first day of track racing at Preston Park in nearly two years is almost upon us, and the weather even looks … well not exactly summer like but it’s going to be dry at least (newcomers: wrap up! It gets cold there when the sun starts to set and you aren’t racing!)

COVID Regs

Please go and read our covid guidance once again. It’s important we all get this right.

Volunteers

Don’t make me say it. I know we need them. You know we need them. And the volunteer sheet is looking empty. Please go here and sign up or get someone to sign up. No volunteers = no racing.

You don’t need any special training., but we cannot race without marshals.

Entries

Remember entries close at 6pm on the Tuesday before racing. We are looking to try and bring this time closer to 6pm on a Wednesday if we can in future, but for the next week or two this is how it will have to be.

THERE WILL BE NO ON THE DAY ENTRY

If you decide not to turn up, we can move your entry to the following week, so you won’t lose out.

Registration

You won’t be able to enter if you haven’t registered. Cut-off time is 6pm on Monday to get into that weeks racing.

THERE WILL BE NO ON THE DAY REGISTRATION

If you missed the deadline this week, get your registration in, and if we have time we might be able to process it in time for you to enter.

Register/Practice/Race!

Just a few items to pass on as we near the start of our long awaited season.

Volunteer Lists

Volunteer lists still looking very empty. Please consider signing up here, especially if you are a parent coming along as a youths helper. (if the spreadsheet appears not to load, click on the tabs at the bottom, it usually reloads it then).

Remember: No volunteers = no racing.

Registration

  • Only registrations received by 6pm on the preceding Monday are likely to be processed in time to enter for Wednesday
  • Registration is ONLINE ONLY this year. There will be NO on the day registration under any circumstances. See the registration page.
  • You WILL NOT be able to enter the races online if you are not registered and approved. Races this year are also ONLINE ENTRY ONLY and can be entered via our track league calendar page.
  • Please don’t all sign up at 5:58 on Monday, try and get it done soon. There is a fair bit of manual checking and keying per-registration at the moment due to our last minute shift to online only and a new entry system. If we have to try and process everyone on Monday night it’s likely that some simply won’t get processed.

First Race Meet: April 14th

Entry opens on Rider HQ at 6am Thursday 8th April. As noted, you must be registered with the league to be able to enter. Click here to enter.

Open Practice

Friday 9th April

Accredited riders required to be there from 6pm to help with accreditation so that the new riders have a bunch to race with.

  • You must be accredited at Preston Park Velodrome to attend.
  • You must have a valid British Cycling “Race” level membership (but do not need a race licence).

The practice is free, and you can enter at Rider HQ here. You must enter online so that we can verify your accreditation status.

No payment is necessary.  If there are too many riders you may have to take it in turns to sit out as accrediting riders must take priority.

Volunteers will be needed anyway to marshal the track so please be prepared to give up a bit of time.

Please remember COVID guidance is still in effect. Try to stay out of big bunches on the track until the accreditation process requires it.
