Circuit Races: Volunteer Alert

Once again we are just two weeks from our first race and we find that very few people have taken up the volunteer positions we require to run the races.

You can sign up on our volunteer status page here, or you can email us by clicking here.

Please consider the following scenarios and whether you can help out:

  • If racing, you could marshall after or before your race, still leaving an hour for warm-up:
    • Older youth could marshall for women after their race
    • Women could marshall for 4ths after their race
    • 4ths could marshall for youth race or for 2/3/4
    • 2/3/4 could marshall for women or 4ths
  • Parents of youth could marshall while they race, meaning no hanging around before or after.
  • Seniors, persuade a friend to come along and marshall for your race.

All marshalls/volunteers working get a free hot drink from coops coffee! Volunteer for more than one race and get a free drink for each race!

We also MUST have qualified First Aid for each race. If you can help in this respect, or if anyone you are bringing to marshall is qualified please let us know.

And now the nasty bit. A reminder:

  • SCRL is a group of volunteers who already give up a large portion of their time to put these races on and ensure that they happen.
  • It is not a cycling club with a roster of volunteers to call on.
  • It is not making money on anything that will not benefit everyone. All profits from the racing that SCRL promotes goes back into promoting the racing, and sustaining and improving the track and the velodrome.

If we can’t fill these positions with a week to go, the event may well have to be cancelled.

If the same thing happens for the next weeks race, the entire series will have to be pulled.

Your co-operation is appreciated.

Lets make this happen!

RESOLVED:Event Booking

Thanks to a swift response at BC (thanks Tarn!) the bookings are open again. Someone (ahem) made a bad edit a couple of days ago which changed the limit across all races.

Now go enter a race!

IMPORTANT: Event Booking

Hi everyone,

We are aware that our first event on the 23rd Feb is showing as fully booked for some reason which prevents entries from being made.

This is not the case and we have asked BC to look into it as a matter of urgency.

We will notify you all when the situation is resolved.

Thanks for your understanding.

Volunteer call to arms!

We are now little more than a month away from our first circuit race of 2020 so we need people to step up and do all the jobs which are a requirement for us to be able to put on British Cycling sanctioned racing.

So whether you are racing, spectating, or just have an interest in keeping our local racing scene and the wonderful venue that is Preston Park Velodrome alive, please sign up.

You can read more about the volunteering roles here, and we now have a dedicated volunteer status page here, where you can see which roles still need to be fulfilled. They include a link to the Google Documents spreadsheet where you can enter your own details into any of the available slots.

If you wish to volunteer but don’t have any access to Google Docs or simply don’t want to use it, you can still email the volunteering coordinator by clicking here and letting us know your name and which slots you can fill. We will then add your details to the spreadsheet for you (please remember this is all volunteer run so if you can add your name yourself that is preferable).

Until then … ride on!

Race time is here again…

Now that we’re all sick of the sight of mince pies and don’t want to see turkey again for at least a year, we all need something to kickstart the exercise again. Well … here it is!

Our Winter Circuit Series is now live on British Cycling and ready for entry. Click here for all the details.

The series kicks off on Sunday February 23rd 2020 and the format is much the same with a few tweaks.

  • Field sizes have been reduced to 30 from 35
  • The first race is a youth A/B race to themselves, not mixed with the Womens race
  • The time of the first race has also been pushed back to 9:30am. This will hopefully encourage a few more youth along by not having to get parents out of bed quite as early on a Sunday!
  • The Womens races will alternate each week between category 3/4 and 2/3/4.
  • From the second week onward, the 2/3/4 senior race will be a Regional A Circuit Race. That means 15 points to the winner!

So what are you waiting for?

Don’t pack away the track bike just yet….

It’s the AGM in a few weeks time, October 5th at 6pm sharp, (usual place: Knoyle Hall on Knoyle Road, Brighton). But this year we’re going to have some racing too…

Come along with your bike and have a go at our SCRL roller racing event!

For those of you not in the know, roller racing is usually a mix of head to head competition between two riders or single effort time trials, all on rollers (on fixed wheel bikes) in the comfort and warmth of the indoors! If you aren’t too confident on rollers, fear not. When you race on rollers there are two “holders” per rider to keep you steady so you can really let rip!

Races are usually over a few short distances (no more than 1km). Both sets of rollers are connected to a giant “clock dial” behind them which tracks the distance, and which the crowd can see but the riders cannot! This all contributes to the yelling and heckling from the crowd which really makes the event come alive!

Top riders will get prizes of a cut from the entry fees (planned to be £2 each), so the more people that enter, the more you can win!

The league will provide some bikes in varying sizes with appropriate gearing, so you don’t need to bring your own (though you can if you want). Ditto the lycra, wear it if you want but it’s not compulsory.

The rollers are very kindly being provided by BEC CC (https://www.beccyclingclub.co.uk).

Some of the SCRL regulars went to a BEC CC roller racing night before the start of the season this year, so to get a taste of whats involved check out the videos below.

Circuit Races #12 26/07

After some damp spells during the day and preceding night the weather turned (mostly) fine for the 12th and final week of our circuit series.

Provisional results are below. As always if there are any queries please email results@scrl.co.uk or use the contact form. Please do not use social media for these queries.

So that just about wraps it up for the circuit series. With just three weeks of racing in the Wednesday track league remaining the summer programme of racing is almost over.

We would like to thank all of the various volunteers, marshalls, commissaires and judges, as well as the other folks who do lots of work outside the actual race meeting, who keep all of our events rolling throughout the year. The racing could not happen without their selfless donation of their personal time.

And we’d also like to thank all the people who raced. We think that Preston Park velodrome has an important part to play in keeping the local (and further!) racing scene alive and well, and it’s great to see so many people enjoy their racing there.

If only there were some sort of mid-winter race at Preston Park ….
